On 23 October 2019 around 36 Old Stoics gathered in ‘The Cad and the Dandy’ on Savile Row, Mayfair for a vertical tasting of 6 consecutive vintages of Rêve de Bakara, from 2017 to 2011. With excellent canapés from Canapé Box, the evening got off to a fine start with a welcome glass of 2017 served from magnums provided by Famille Clarke.
As the tasting progressed, Andrew introduced each vintage, explaining the variations in qualities and characteristics they displayed. He talked about the wine history of the region, the cycles of Chablis’ success and difficulties through the centuries including the Huguenot revolt, the French revolution, imported pests like mildew and phylloxera, and the impact of the two world wars.
They also discussed the wine-making process, the unique aspects of Chablis based on its geology, geography and grapes. An excellent sequel to the event held at the Phene Pub in 2017, and we hope to be invited back soon to the Corkscrew Society with the Old Stoics.
